Alaska, Kate + Will

How did Alaska come into your world?

Alaska came to us from Hillhaven Dachshunds in New South Wales, born early December 2021. Following lockdown, we decided that it was time that we finally got dog after discussing it for years. After a lot of questions and hesitation we saw a picture of Alaska and knew that she needed to be a part of our lives.

How would you describe her personality?

Alaska is the embodiment of love and affection. She is always overjoyed to see friends and family and will flop on her back to get belly rubs from almost everyone. She will make a fuss as soon as she can't get to you. She is also extremely curious and adventurous. always digging through drawers, stalking through bushes and stealing forbidden items. Alaska understands the commands she is given but simply ignore you if she is in the mood to run around and play! She never stops until she stops very suddenly.

If she could tell us all something about you, what would she say?

She would be asking questions and making demands rather tell me anything. "I love you. Chase me! Where are you going? Why should I stop? Play with me now. Give me attention."

What does she love to do the most?

Alaska loves to be chased. She will steal thinks she knows are forbidden so that you have to chase her around the house. She loves an extended game of tug of war into chasey. When she's tired however she needs to be on the couch or in bed with you so you can be her pillow.

What's everyday life like with your little girl by your side?

We still feel like we are dog sitting most days. We have gone so long without a dog of our own that we can hardly believe we have her. It is so wonderful to take trips out of the house now with Alaska and seeing everyone fawn over her. When working from home, she is my companion who makes sure I get up regularly and who sleeps on the back of my chair, around my neck like a pillow. We have an amazing companion who loves us unconditionally.

How has having Alaska changed your life?

It has made us more patient and better organised, as well as more tired! We have to make sure that she is happy and looked after which keeps us more alert and present. you have to learn to move on when your things get chewed up! Most of all there is so much more love in our life with Alaska.

Alaska, and dachshunds in general, are amazing pets. I have been around dogs all my life, but the connection and affection from Alaska is like no other dog I've ever experienced. She is more like a cat than a dog. Our life is forever changed from now on.
