Dominica Grace (aka Ronnie) + Lib

I don’t need to write much of an introduction for this blog post, Lib’s answers to my questions are already so articulate and honest that my own words feel superfluous.
For some back story, I first met with Lib in January of this year to photograph her darling old girl, Phemie (scroll back through the Dog Blogs and you’ll find her and Phemie as my first ever post.) Tragically, Phemie passed away suddenly in August, and I awoke that day to a text message from Lib sharing with me the terrible news. While saddened, I am glad however, that we have kept in touch. Because of this I was lucky enough to visit Lib in her beautiful home once more and be introduced to the newest edition to her family, Dominica Grace, aka Ronnie.
Lib tells us in her own beautiful words the story of Ronnie in it’s very beginnings.

How did Ronnie come into your world?

My little lass Phemie had to be put to sleep under emergency conditions in August. Shock and grief swept in and the the loss was quite overwhelming. Friends knew I would need another small companion and I rang a breeder they knew of to put my name down for an older dog. Usually I have had rescues, but they are few and far between these days. This breeder had one already available and within a fortnight this little girl came into my life. Possibly a little quick but for many reasons I feel she was meant to come to me.

How would you describe her personality?

Very timid and cowed to start but gradually becoming more confident and sociable. Very eager to please, vigilant and loves to be your tiny shadow. I look forward to seeing her become more relaxed eventually, able to let loose and display all her quirks.

If Ronnie could tell us all something about you, what would she say?

Attentive, kind and a bit eccentric! A work in progress.

What's everyday life like with little Ronnie by your side?

My dogs have always been my guides and solace in an often chaotic world. Each has brought their unique gifts and kept me grounded and growing. They have brought so much laughter, happiness and modelled for me the traits we need most. Loyalty, intelligence, trust, gratitude, forgiveness, resilience and a willing heart. Their love has been steadfast and their need of me has given purpose and balance to my life.

What does Ronnie love to do the most?

Cuddle, be close by and eat! As Dominica came to me quite unwell and unvaccinated, walks have been out but I look forward to her being strong enough to enjoy the outside world with me.

How has having a dog changed your life?

I feel they have helped me grow into a better person. Having someone to think of before yourself and meet their needs. More patient, less demanding, more sensitive and nurturing. Unlike with people, you can give your love wholeheartedly to a dog without fear of rejection or heartache. The only pain they ever give you is when they die.

Dogs have been the mainstay throughout my life. I miss my Phemie daily and deeply and this is as it should be. Grief proves the love to be true. Having Dominica has helped me settle, given me purpose and the desire to build a new life with her. To take the risk to open my heart yet again.

Thank you Lib, and welcome to your new home Ronnie. You don’t know how lucky you are.

x Dani.
